Come see Dr. Arnold Miller, internationally renowned autism theorist/clinician Children with autism live in a confusing world where sensory impressions often are not integrated or even registered. Additionally, children with autism have poor body-other awareness, which hampers organized responses to their environments. Dr. Miller uses diverse strategies and equipment to help children achieve meaningful systems of thought and action. Dr. Miller lends order to the chaos experienced by children with autism, but he also knows that carefully introduced disorder is vital to help children cope with change. The Miller Method® teaches us that cognition and language also develop in moments of disorder, when we draw children into meaningful interaction by carefully disrupting systems. How does the Miller Method introduce productive disorder? A pair of eyeglasses perched precariously, crumpled paper strewn across the familiar order of a room, “stealing” the glass just as the child is ready to pour - these are all prods for many children on the spectrum. Dr. Miller’s uses of disorder engages even the most self-absorbed child, who - like all children - feels compelled to "correct" the incongruities in his/her world. The Miller Method engages and challenges children up the developmental ladder by exploiting this universal impulse to repair systems. There is no intervention more powerful than carefully juxtaposing order and disorder to pull children into the more complex systems of our world.
